This is why your 'go to' products have stopped working

Has this ever happened to you? You've been doing the same hair routine with the same products for a long time but something is off with your hair. It doesn't curl like it used to or the hairstyle just doesn't come out right? Frustrated with your hair, you'll pull it into a ponytail because that's the only thing that seems to work.
If your hair has stopped reacting to your 'go to' products, one or a combination of these factors could be the cause:
Hardwater Buildup
Hard water can build up on our strands, clogging the strands ability to absorb moisture, nutrients and water. This type of buildup will cause the hair to appear dull, hard to touch and easier to break. Your strands will become less elastic and product resistant.
The solution: Use a scalp detox masque, this will break up the buildup, unclog the pores and holes in your strands. Our Mask-E Scalp Detox gets rid of impurities like hard water buildup while reseting the pH of the hair and scalp. After you've used the scalp detox, follow up, with our gentle moisturizing cleanser, Almond & Shea Butter Moisturizing Shampoo, it removes excess dirt and oils without stripping the hair.
Product Buildup
Product buildup is caused, well by product building up on the strands and not being removed. The purpose of shampoos, which contains cleansing agents is to remove product buildup, dirt and debris from the strands. By using shampoo, you will allow your strands to breathe and easily absorb water, oils, and nutrients making the hair more elastic--thus your hair will be easier to curl. Many naturals, have replaced shampooing with co-washing. If you’re a curly girl that only co-washes and never shampoo then product can build up on your strands causing it to be resistant.
The solution: Use a shampoo. It's really that simple. If you absolutely loathe shampoos then use one at least 2x a month. Our gentle cleansing yet moisturizing, Almond & Shea Butter Moisturizing Shampoo will make you fall in love with shampooing your hair. It not only smells great (like orange citrus with a hint of nut) but it gently cleanses your strands, leaving your hair feeling soft, clean and easily to detangle (Yes our shampoo, does all of that!). The only way to get rid of product buildup is to use a cleansing agent, not a conditioning agent, so use a shampoo.
Heat Damage
If you’ve over processed your strands with heat then it will not curl. No matter how much you wash it. I am so sorry, sis. This is because the structure of the hair's protein has been permanently changed by a process called denaturation (definition: destroy the characteristic properties of (a protein or other biological macromolecule) by heat, acidity, or other effects that disrupt its molecular conformation.). Similar to using a relaxer, that permanently changes the structure of the hair strand so it remains straight. Heat damage, strips away at the cuticle leaving your hair straight, dry and brittle.

The solution: Get regular trims to remove the damage ends. If you do not trim the damaged ends, it can ruin the entire hair strand. And we do not want that! It's best to do 'damage control' by removing the frayed ends. To strengthen and prevent further damage, we recommend using our Honey Ginger Protein Strengthening Treatment. This treatment will repair damaged hair and help your hair's overall health and appearance.
Environmental Changes
Hair responds differently to weather conditions like cold, heat or humidity levels. A product that works well for your hair in the Summer may not yield the same results in the Winter. So as the seasons change, you may have to switch it up. Winter months will require heavier conditioning products like deep treatment masks, curl creams, oil blends and applying leave-in every day. Summer months will require lighter products like leave-in conditioners (every other day), medium hold gels, and foams.

The solution: If you find that your hair is drier in Winter months, then use a deep conditioning treatment every week. Our Banana Nut & Avocado Deep Treatment is a great moisturizing treatment that will keep your hair soft, supple and conditioned. For Summer months, you will need to reach for lighter products like our Thirsty Kurls Leave-in Conditioner, it will keep your strands hydrated without weighing it down and it's perfect for pairing with our medium hold, Jelle Coconut Styling Gel.
